Yesterday was my first real experience of a 4th of July in the States. I was here last summer on a J1 and had to watch the people around me having the time of their lives, while I worked. This year I was able to sit back, relax and really get the most out of my Independence Day. It was a great opportunity to reflect on my time in Chicago so far.
An advantage of being an unemployed traveller (to which there is many) is not having to work the big holidays. You can live it large with everyone else. The 4th of July is very much a big deal over here, so obviously I wanted to fit as much in on the day as possible, which didn’t really work out as planned.
What I thought would be a quick trip to the beach swiftly turned into an all-day event which in turn delayed my plans to head downtown to the fireworks at Navy Pier. Not really thinking ahead I arrived at the pier around 8:45pm, 45 minutes before the fireworks were due to start, to find that it was closed off due to capacity.
The next aim was to find a somewhat decent vantage point to see the fireworks. Many late comers to the pier appeared to have a similar idea so it was just a matter of following the crowd, which led me to the nearest footbridge just in time to see the fireworks begin. While I have seen the fireworks that take place every Saturday and Wednesday at Navy Pier, they really went all out for the 4th of July. Although I didn’t fit as much in as I planned I still had a great day, at least I’ll know for next time to be early.
